Spider-Man Movie Villains

After months of waiting, interview teases, and potential leaks, we finally got the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer on August 23, 2021. The movie’s a direct follow-up to the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home where Mysterio reveals Peter’s identity to the entire world.

The trailer finally confirms what we’ve all been hoping for: the multiverse is open and villains from previous, non-MCU, Spider-Man franchises are here. We know for sure that Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock is back, with many more of our favourite baddies rumored to be appearing as well. With all this villainy afoot, we thought it would be fun to look back on all our personal favorite villains throughout Spider-Man’s movie history.

Doctor Octopus

Doc Ock from Spider-Man 2

It’s hard to beat Doc Ock. After losing his wife and his life’s work, his AI arms turn Otto Octavius from a man trying to help the world, into an evil villain trying to destroy it. However, in his final moments Otto is more of a hero than a villain as he dies saving the world from his experiment; and from himself.

Electro

Electro from Amazing Spider-Man 2

Jamie Foxx’s Electro is vastly underrated in the Spiderverse. From a nobody who’s disregarded by everyone he meets, Maxwell Dillon transforms into the all-electricity super villain Electro due to an accident at work. He always idolized Spider-Man, but Spidey “betrays” him once Maxwell becomes Electro. That hurts. Bonus: his electric powers are really cool.

Green Goblin

Green Goblin from Spider-Man

Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin was one of the smartest villains. It doesn’t take Norman Osborne long to figure out Peter’s secret identity, and his final fight scene with Spidey is so good you just can’t look away. Just like Doc, he’s about to lose his company and everything he worked for, so you almost get why he became the villain he did.

Mysterio

Mysterio from Far From Home

If you set aside the “Tony called my tech B.A.R.F so I’m evil now” origin, Mysterio is one cool villain. He’s a great friend and mentor to Peter at first, making the betrayal more painful. Plus, he and his drones give us one of the best scenes to come from any Spider-Man movies: Tom Holland’s Spider Sense fight scene. Chills.

Venom

Venom from Venom

Though he hasn’t fought Spider-Man yet (specifically in the solo Tom Hardy movies), this version of Venom is amazing. We get a cool origin story for a villain in a way we haven’t seen with most Spider-Man villains (since, you know, Spidey is the star). Also, Tom Hardy plays a broken-down Eddy Brock with such skill and conviction.

Green Goblin

Green Goblin from Amazing Spider-Man 2

Another underrated villain is Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin which put a different spin on the character in comparison to Willem Dafoe’s version. When Spidey won’t help Harry with his fatal illness, he takes a serum that does more harm than good: it changes his appearance to an actual Goblin, and he now requires the Green Goblin suit to stay alive. It’s a cool origin that sets up his hatred for Spidey and we love that he’s basically a real goblin, not just wearing a mask.
