COOL SCHOOL MOVIES

Here at FAN EXPO HQ, our team is always nerding out over the world of fandom. On Team Picks, we share some of our favorite things we’ve been watching, reading, and playing. This month, we’re exploring our favourite movies set at school.

High School Musical

There are so, so many movies set at schools, but of all of them, the best one for me has to be High School Musical. Is it some critically-acclaimed masterpiece? No. But in its own right, it's a fun movie that a lot of people look back at fondly from when it first aired 16 years ago. Plus, who can resist the awesome music?

P.S., High School Musical 2 is the best one. Fight me.

Step Up

Two characters stand looking at each other in a dance studio

Step Up was the MOMENT back in 2006. I'm pretty sure it made all of my peers wish we were students at a School of the Arts. Not only was the music and dancing fantastic (Channing Tatum, am I right?), but it gave us a peek into different cultures, backgrounds, and school systems. It spurred a series that continued for 8 years (let's be honest... Step Up 2 may have been even better), and the dance exhibition at the end of the movie will live rent free in my head for the rest of my life.

Legally Blonde

Three characters stand, arms linked with various expressions on their faces

Case: Legally Blonde is one of the best movies set in school. Evidence #1: Strong female role models. #2: The character growth that Elle Woods has as her goals and priorities shift from trying to get Warner to her focusing on herself and overcoming the expectations and judgement that others have set on her, developing into an amazing lawyer through her unique perspective. Evidence #3: Emmett is the standard. He is supportive, respectful, and considerate to Elle. Evidence #4 The iconic one liners that have stood the test of time. If there are no further objections, I rest my case.

IT

Three of the kids from the IT movie stand looking at a piece of paper

Emily

You would never think about it, but the movie IT is the perfect school movie. Why? Because a group of 7 kids form an unbreakable friendship that helps save the town of Derry from Pennywise. If it wasn't for them meeting at school, who knows how many people Pennywise would have consumed into the deadlight.

Heathers

Four characters stand, three smiling and 1 serious, looking off to their right

Heathers - the OG mean girls that melds the beauty of a thriller with the joy of comedy! The cult classic is such a staple on my watch list that I make all of my friends include it on movie night! I recommend settling in with a bag of BQ corn nuts and a slurpee to enjoy this little piece of 80s magic.
