FAVE HOLIDAY SIDE DISHES

Here at FAN EXPO HQ, our team is always nerding out over the world of fandom. On Team Picks, we share some of our favorite things we’ve been watching, reading, and playing. Since the holidays are quickly approaching, we'll be sharing our absolute favourite side dishes!

Sweet Potato Casserole

This is the first thing to go at holiday meals! Typically people top it with marshmallows and pecans, but we've always been a brown sugar and pecan family! It compliments the salty and savory selection of holiday staples so perfectly. I would find excuses to eat it with every meal if I could.

Oh, the holidays. More like holi-daze given how much food you can seemingly try thanks to all your friends and family bringing waaaaaay too much. That being said, one of my personal faves when it comes to favourite holiday side dishes is a pastry called ensaymada. You can think of it as a soft brioche bun topped with a tasty combination of sugar, butter, and (sometimes) cheese, one that goes really well with hot chocolate. While it isn't necessarily tied to a specific holiday, there is ALWAYS someone who ends up bringing it to the holiday parties (especially Christmas ones) that my family hosts.

Green Bean Casserole

Green bean casserole is the best holiday side dish and you can't convince me otherwise. You get your veggies in with a nice side of crunchy bits thanks to the fried onions. Salty, savory, and delicious. Not to mention it's dirt cheap and easy to make! My husband had never had green bean casserole before we started dating (his family does very fancy holiday dinners), and now I've got them all hooked and I'm in charge of bringing the casserole every year. Huzzah!

Yams

Both my dad and grandma would make amazing dishes with Yams for the holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas are the Holidays that my dad gets to show off his cooking skills, which has the best sides so it was hard to pick. My dad makes bourbon yams that are now my favorite sides at Thanksgiving. They are just so flavorful and tasty that I always have to go for seconds. My grandma used to make my brother and I yams with Marshmallow and brown sugar when we were little and those introduced me to yams and sweet potatoes.

Mashed Potatoes with Gravy

This is a tough one but if I had to pick one side dish, it would have to be mashed potatoes with gravy. Ever since I was little, I've loved gravy and what pairs better with gravy than potatoes? I look forward to eating it at every holiday!
