THE RINGS OF POWER

MEDDLING IN MIDDLE EARTH

Set in the Second-Age, Amazon Prime's Rings of Power series dives in to the deep history of J R.R. Tolkien's mythical world, filled with creatures, elves, magic, and mystery. With Season Two just around the corner, we thought you might want a refresher of everything we saw and everyone we met in Season One.

PEOPLE OF THE REALM

MEN (HUMANS)

Mortals with a lifespan averaging between 80-100 years, though Numenoreans have an expectancy of up to 300-500 years. They vary in physical appearance, location, culture, and language, though most speak Westron (Common Speech). They are one of the Five Free People of the World.

ELVES

DWARVES

A short, stocky people, with the average height being between Hobbits and Men. They live to be around 250-350 years old, and speak Westron, though some also speak Khuzdûl and/or Sindarin. One of the Free Peoples of the World.

HOBBITS

A nomadic, mortal race of people. Usually between 2 and 4 feet tall, they are also known as halflings, and speak Westron, the Common Speech of Middle Earth. One of the Five Free Peoples of the World.

WIZARDS/ISTARI

Immortal, primordial spirits (Maiar) disguised as wizards. They were sent to aid the inhabitants of Middle-Earth against dark threats. The can communicate in any language needed, given their hidden but powerful nature as Maiar.

ORCS

Soldiers created by Morgoth, serving both him and Sauron, and sometimes referred to as goblins. They speak Westron and Orkish and live in various places. Their lifespan varies, as well as their height, though they're mostly shorter than humans. They have many different divisions, their origin is obscure, and are known for being the servants of evil.

THE CHOSEN CHARACTERS

With such an amazing ensemble cast to write about, we had to choose a few main characters to dive into. Check out the main players of the series to remember who to look for in Season Two.

GALADRIEL

One of the strongest, smartest, and most beautiful elves in the history of Tolkien's universe. This is the youngest version of her that we've seen on-screen, in a new storyline based off of source material other than the main trilogies.

THE STRANGER

A man whose identity remains unconfirmed, though is confirmed to be one of the Istari - Maiar 'Wizards' sent to help against the Dark Lord.

HALBRAND

Appears human, but is Sauron is disguise. One of the Maiar who had turned and served Morgoth, and soon to be the new Dark Lord for many years to come.

ELROND

A second generation half elf, Elrond is a powerful character of Middle Earth. In this series we see a younger version of Huge Weaving's iconic character from the movies, where he is a herald to High King Gil-Galad and friend of Durin IV.

DURIN IV

King of Durin's folk and residing in Khazad-Dûm. During his rule the Dwarves find Mithril veins in the mountain, which his pal Elrond needs to complete some work for Celebrimbor.

NORI

A Harfoot Hobbit, friend of the Stranger. An original character created for the show, she is the first person to connect with the Stranger and try to help him out.

ADAR

Leader of the Orcs, an elf that was tortured by Morgoth and corrupted. He claims to have killed Sauron for his abuse of the orcs.

GIL-GALAD

The High King of the Elves, he is smart, wise, and well-spoken. His understanding of the darkness moving throughout Middle Earth lead to the creation of the three rings, one of which he would wear himself.

CELEBRIMBOR

An Elven Master Smith, he is the creator of the Three Rings, with help and influence from Gil-Galad, Elrond, Galadriel, and Halbrand.

ELENDIL

Captain of Númenor's Sea Guard, father of Isildur. He is a Lord of Andúnië and friend to the Elves, though most of Númenor are unfriendly to Elves.

ISILDUR

Son of Elendil, he is a cadet of the Sea Guard and volunteers to go to Middle Earth with the Queen to escort Galadriel after hearing voices calling to him numerous times. If you've seen the movies, you know what fate befalls this young version of the character.

Míriel

Queen-Regent of Númenor, ruling in the place of her dying father. She is strong, smart, and graceful, having strong opinions on the direction for Numenor's future, yet believing in the mystical omens around her and in the palantir to guide her decisions.

OUR FAVE CHARACTERS

ARONDIR

Arondir stood out to me in The Rings of Power because we had never seen an elf like him in the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. I was glued to the screen whenever he graced a scene, intrigued by his motivations. As a protector of his village with qualities of an aspiring leader, his strong sense of duty and honor to his people is inspiring. Plus, who doesn't like a sharpshooter with a bow? My favorite character in The Lord of the Rings was Legolas, so there might be a theme here with archers.

ELROND

Elrond is my favourite of the Rings of Power characters. His friendship with Durin parallels the fun, competitive relationship we see between Gimli and Legolas in the main trilogy. I'm excited to see how their friendship progresses in the second season with the creation of the Rings.

THE STRANGER

The mystery of the Stranger caught my attention immediately. Though he doesn't say much, you can tell he's a powerful being from the start, and working under the assumption of him being a Maiar, we don't know at the beginning if he is set to be good or bad. By the end of season one we at least know he's not Sauron, so I'm excited to see if he truly is one of the Istari of legend, his true identity, and how he will develop in the next season. I truly believe he will be one of the Blue Wizards sent to help guide the Free Peoples, as Gandalf once said “a wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to".
