Joker: Folie à Deux

The Clown Prince Of Crime Finds A Partner

The most iconic comic book villain is getting a new sidekick in the highly anticipated sequel Joker: Folie à Deux this October. The casting of Harley Quinn sparked intense speculation, and to everyone's surprise, Lady Gaga was chosen to star alongside Joaquin Phoenix. Adding to the intrigue, the sequel is a musical. While Todd Phillips' sequel announcement raised some concerns, the first trailer eased many fears. Now, with the sequel here, let's dive into the character and introduce the key players in the film.

New and Familiar Smiles

Arthur Fleck

He may be a failed comedian but he is the star of the show, in his head. Arthur has got sick of the hierarchy in Gotham after killing famous talk show host, Murray Franklin, he has eyes set on a new motivation. Now with more followers and a new companion added to the mix, Joker is incentivized to take chaos to a whole another level.

Harley Quinn

The new girl on the block is chomping at the bits to join the frey. After seeing Arthur shock the world, Harley meets the infamous 'Joker' in Arkham State Hospital. Feeling like a nobody, she jumps into the persona of Harley Quinn to enact the same level of disarray the Joker is known for.

Sophie Dumond

Sophie, the lady of interest next door wasn't scared of joker regardless of the condition he was in. Be it after a few bullies on the street or getting involved with the police. Sophie has seen her fair share of sketchy dudes but took in interest in Joker. Now with Harley, this leaves Sophie in a interesting situation in the sequel.

Gotham City Is Its Own Character

Gotham City stands out as one of the most perilous fictional cities in entertainment due to its deep-seated crime and corruption. This atmosphere of constant menace is worsened by a corrupt political system and a failing police force, creating a chaotic landscape where danger lurks around every corner. Gotham’s pervasive decay and moral decline, along with its high-stakes conflicts, make it uniquely treacherous, embodying the darkest aspects of urban decay and criminality across various adaptations. In Joker, Gotham is portrayed similarly but without a Batman to swoop in and save the day, highlighting the city's perilous nature even more starkly.

Our Most Beloved Versions Of The Joker

Heath Ledger

Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in "The Dark Knight" was a masterclass in embracing chaos and complexity, reflecting the actor's own shifting narrative and enigmatic persona. Ledger’s Joker, with his disturbing backstory about the scars on his face, embodied a man whose history was as fragmented and unpredictable as his actions. Each version of his scars—told through different stories with varying motives—mirrored the chaotic and manipulative nature of the character. Ledger's intense immersion into the role was not merely a performance but a transformation, blurring the lines between actor and role. His dedication to capturing the Joker's essence made the character’s unpredictability palpable, evoking both fascination and unease. Ledger's personal struggles and tragic fate only added to the mystique surrounding his portrayal, making it a haunting reflection of a man who, like the Joker, seemed to defy conventional understanding. His performance remains a poignant reminder of the fragile boundary between brilliance and madness, leaving an indelible mark on both cinema and the hearts of those who witnessed his turbulent genius.

Mark Hamill

Some may know him for his role as Luke Skywalker, but my first contact to Mark Hamill was the Joker in The Batman Animated Series. Bringing such a maniacal approach to the character, I was hooked from day 1. The dynamic with him and Kevin Conroy is unparalleled. For years, when you asked how these characters should sound, everyone would point to their performance as the golden standard for these iconic characters. Others trying to replicate the 'Mark Hamill Approach' whilst still trying to do their own thing just didn't quite reach the heights of what he was able to do in that show and in subsequent movies that followed. Down to his unnerving laugh, his quirky puns, and downright unpredictable nature of who dies in every crime he commits. Mark displayed a version of the character that became who we all expect to see across the comics, tv shows, movies, and video games. Marks performance has even left fans even wishing for a version similar for a live screen adaptation one day. James Gunn, we hope you are listening. Since Mark Hamill has heavily suggested he would not return to the role after his last appearance in Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 3, I am not sure if anyone can replicate his greatness as the clown prince of crime. Forever, the version I see who is the Joker.

Cesar Romero

Of all of the portrayals of The Joker over the years, there’s one that deserves way more credit than he gets. The surprising thing is that he was the first! In his film star heyday, Cesar Romero worked with some of the biggest stars and even had his own small Cowboy film franchise. As film material dried up he transitioned to TV and ended up making a bigger mark than he could ever have imagined on the Batman show which ran from 1966-69. Under a green wig, white makeup, and his trademark mustache which he refused to shave for the part, he was able to cut loose in a way that made him completely unforgettable. Every actor to play the part since has been doing it in response to his portrayal. No one’s laugh can compare to his, so everyone is either doing an imitation of it, or deliberately underplaying it. Any time a Joker dramatically rolls his ‘R’s or slips into a faux British accent, they are following the pattern established by Cesar. You can debate who did it best, but what’s undeniable is that this man set the baseline that everyone else is measured against.
