MUTANTS SCATTERED ACROSS TIME
Here’s a look at the major characters you should expect to see.
CYCLOPS
Cyclops known as a stoic leader defined by his tactical brilliance and unwavering discipline. X-Men '97 delves deeper into his character, showcasing his vulnerabilities, grief, and the immense weight of leadership he carries. The series emphasizes his struggle to hold the team together in the wake of devastating loss, not just as a commander following orders, but as someone grappling with impossible choices, personal trauma, and the constant pressure to honor Professor Xavier's dream while forging his own path.
WOLVERINE
Wolverine's gruff, fiercely protective side makes him a compelling and complex character. Logan is haunted and emotionally guarded, a stark contrast to the more optimistic members of the team. This duality reveals a man constantly at war with his own nature—a feral warrior capable of devastating violence, yet driven by an unshakeable need to protect those he considers family, even when it costs him everything.
STORM
Storm is shown to be compassionate and devoted, deeply caring for her team and the mutant cause, but also uncertain and willing to question everything she once believed in. Her journey explores the cost of power, the struggle between duty and personal happiness, and what it means to reclaim your sense of self in the world.
JEAN GREY
In the original series, Jean Grey is portrayed as a compassionate and powerful figure, serving as the heart of the X-Men and one of the team's most formidable telepaths. Her presence in X-Men '97 elevates the story to a cosmic and devastating scale, introducing themes of sacrifice, identity, and the terrifying price of unlimited power. Her connection to the Phoenix Force, reveals a woman torn between the life she desperately wants and the cosmic entity threatening to consume everything she loves.
BEAST
Often seen as the team's brilliant scientist and voice of reason, the consequences of his own choices brings a sense of darkness and tragedy to the story leading into season 2. His journey from trusted ally to a man grappling with devastating decisions reveals the painful cost of genius when hope turns to desperation, transforming Beast into one of the season's most heartbreaking and morally ambiguous characters.
ROGUE
Rogue's interactions with the team and her struggle with Gambit's death reveal her vulnerable heart and her desperate desire to find connection in a world where her powers keep her isolated. Her journey through grief and guilt shows that even the strongest mutants can be shattered by loss. This portrayal transforms Rogue from the tough Southern belle into a woman confronting unimaginable pain.
THE FALLEN
Gambit's death stands as one of the most heartbreaking and heroic moments in X-Men '97, taking place during the catastrophic Genoshan genocide. As Sentinels unleashed devastation upon the mutant sanctuary of Genosha, slaughtering thousands of mutants who had sought refuge and peace, Gambit made the ultimate sacrifice to save as many lives as possible. In his final stand, Remy LeBeau charged up his powers to their absolute limit, unleashing a massive kinetic explosion that destroyed a colossal Sentinel threatening to kill countless more innocent mutants. Among those he saved was Rogue, the woman he loved, along with numerous other mutants desperately trying to escape the massacre.

PREVIOUSLY ON X-MEN '97
The Genoshan genocide orchestrated by Bastion and his Sentinel forces left thousands of mutants dead, including fan-favorite Gambit, whose heroic sacrifice became one of the season's most heartbreaking moments. Magneto's rage and grief pushed him to the brink, nearly tearing the world apart before Professor Xavier intervened to stop him, leading to a climactic battle that saw the team fractured and scattered. The season concluded with Xavier and Magneto trapped in the Savage Land, several X-Men lost in time, and the remaining heroes facing an uncertain future in a world more hostile to mutants than ever. These seismic events set the stage for season 2 to explore themes of loss, redemption, and rebuilding, as the X-Men must reunite across time and space while confronting the lasting trauma of genocide and determining what kind of heroes they need to become in this darker reality.

WHAT WE WANT TO SEE IN SEASON 2
The one true future Bastian spoke about is what the X-Men must stop at all costs. But now, they're scattered across space and time and must rally together for a looming threat bigger than what they faced before. Cyclops and Jean Grey thought they said goodbye to their only son, but it only led to a whole new beginning with Nathan, also known as Cable. The others were looped in with Magneto to the origin of En Sabah Nur, also known as Apocalypse. How their paths will intertwine will make for an epic season. We will finally see Cyclops and Jean Grey go on adventures with Cable just like he hoped after over 200 attempts to change the past to affect the future. Professor X and Magneto have patched things up momentarily, but what will happen as the threat of Apocalypse draws near has me chomping at the bit. I expect them to incorporate The Rise of Apocalypse arc from 1996, ironically enough. The implications are endless, with his tragic origins only leading to impending doom. Plus, with the team not being together, it puts them at a significant disadvantage. I expect Bishop to find Cyclops and Jean Grey and have to pull them away from raising their son the way they envisioned, just so they may have a chance to save the world.
