ALL-STARS TRAVELLING ACROSS THE GALAXY

Here’s a look at the major characters set to appear in the sequel.

MARIO

While the video games often present Mario as a protagonist with very few words, defined by his bravery and determination, the films delve deeper into his character, showcasing his insecurities, humor, and emotional depth. Additionally, the films emphasize his determination to prove himself, not just as a hero, but as someone who can rise above challenges and inspire others.

LUIGI

Luigi's softer, more empathetic side, makes him a relatable and endearing character. His portrayal has been pretty close to his interpretation from the games but expanded upon. Luigi is timid and anxious, a stark contrast to Mario's bold and adventurous nature. His moments of fear are contrasted with his surprising bravery when it matters, showing that his courage comes from his heart rather than a natural sense of heroism.

PRINCESS PEACH

Princess Peach's personality in the movies is given a bold and refreshing reinterpretation compared to her portrayal in the games. Traditionally, depicted as the damsel in distress in much of the Mario franchise, in the films, she is strong, capable, and the independent leader of the Mushroom Kingdom. She is shown to be compassionate and wise, deeply caring for her people, but also fearless and willing to fight for what she believes in.

ROSALINA

In the games, Rosalina is portrayed as a mysterious and ethereal figure, serving as the guardian of the cosmos and the caretaker of the Lumas in Super Mario Galaxy. Her presence could elevate the story to a grander scale, introducing themes of destiny, interconnectedness, and the vastness of the universe. Her personality is calm, wise, and maternal, with a sense of melancholy stemming from her backstory, which reveals themes of loss and resilience.

YOSHI

Yoshi’s personality and charm has been on full display in the trailers for the upcoming film which gives a more expressive and dynamic portrayal compared to his depiction in the games, where he is often seen as a loyal companion and trusty steed for Mario. Yoshi’s playful nature and boundless energy bring a sense of lightheartedness to the story, making him a lovable and memorable addition to the cast.

TOAD

Toad’s personality in the movies is given a vibrant and comedic reinterpretation, making him a standout character compared to his portrayal in the games. Toad’s interactions with Mario and Luigi reveal his kind-hearted nature and his desire to prove himself as a capable and valuable member of the team. His boundless energy and optimism inspire those around him, showing that even the smallest characters can make a big impact.

BOWSER

Bowser is given a more comedic yet layered portrayal compared to his depiction in the games, where he is often presented as a straightforward villain. In the movie, Bowser retains his iconic traits of being a powerful, menacing antagonist, but his character is expanded to include moments of humor, emotional vulnerability, and even romantic obsession. He is not just a villain to be feared but also one to be laughed at and, in some ways, empathized with.

BOWSER JR.

Bowser Jr., while not featured in the previous film, is a character with significant potential for development in future installments. In the games, Bowser Jr. is portrayed as a mischievous, energetic, and fiercely loyal son to Bowser, often acting as his father’s right-hand accomplice in schemes to capture Princess Peach or thwart Mario. Bowser Jr. from just the trailers is portrayed as a brash and overconfident character who idolizes his father.

SUPER MARIO GALAXY GAMES

Hailed as one of Mario's greatest adventures, the second film in an eventual trilogy continues the franchise's legacy with groundbreaking creativity. Developed during the Nintendo Wii era, the game's innovative gravity mechanics opened a floodgate of possibilities, inspiring future titles like Super Mario Odyssey (2017) and Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023) to incorporate similar features. Its exceptional level design set an unparalleled benchmark in the 3D platformer genre, while the introduction of an orchestral score marked a milestone for the series. The resulting soundtrack, featuring unforgettable tracks, remains among the most iconic in Mario's 40-year history, solidifying the game's place as a masterpiece in gaming.

NEW CHARACTERS WE ARE EXCITED TO SEE

YOSHI

Yoshi has always been one of the most beloved characters in the Mario universe, and seeing him brought to life in the trailers has been nothing short of magical. Yoshi’s portrayal in the previews so far has already captured my heart. This marks Yoshi’s first major cinematic appearance in years, and the anticipation couldn’t be higher. From his iconic egg-throwing abilities to his lovable demeanor, Yoshi is a character that has left an indelible mark on generations of fans. The Super Mario Galaxy movie is shaping up to be a celebration of everything we love about Yoshi, and I can’t wait to see him shine on the big screen.

WART

When I saw that Wart was appearing in this movie, a tsunami of emotions hit me. This is a character I haven’t seen since my childhood, playing Super Mario Bros. 2—the black sheep of the original 2D adventure games. For the first time, Mario faced a new threat instead of his usual nemesis, Bowser. Wart’s design is so unique that it left a lasting impression on Mario fans, and we’ve been clamoring to see him brought to life in 3D ever since. Unlike most Mario bosses, who are defeated through jumps or power-ups, Wart can only be defeated by throwing vegetables into his mouth, exploiting his aversion to them. This unusual weakness adds a quirky and memorable twist to his character, and I hope the film finds a way to incorporate it. The Super Mario Galaxy movie marks the first time Wart has appeared in any form since his debut in 1988, making his return all the more special.

ROSALINA

I am absolutely thrilled to see Rosalina in the upcoming film. She has always been my favorite character from the Mario Galaxy games I loved playing growing up. Her incredible power, paired with her calming, maternal presence for the Lumas, made her truly unforgettable. I can’t wait to finally see her in action, showcasing her amazing abilities in a fight. Brie Larson is a fantastic choice for the role—she’s brought so many iconic blonde characters to life across my favorite fandoms, and I know she’ll be a perfect fit for Rosalina.
