Award Show Season
ON WITH THE SHOW
With the news from the Golden Globes still buzzing across social media, there's no better time to dive into award season. Today, we’re exploring the basics and revisiting some of the most unforgettable moments throughout the years. Which award are you most excited for?
HERE'S THE SCOOP
Below are just a few of annual award shows and what differentiates them.
THE OSCARS (ACADEMY AWARDS)
The Oscars, officially known as the Academy Awards are Hollywood’s glittery Super Bowl. The stars suit up, the cameras flash, and the world watches to see who gets crowned the best of the best. It’s the night where trophies are handed out for everything from Best Picture to Best Sound Editing, with a few curveballs like Best Animated Feature and Best Visual Effects mixed in. The anticipation peaks when golden envelopes are opened, and the winners deliver speeches that range from tear-jerking to "Wait, did they really just say that?" It’s a mix of drama, fancy dresses, and the occasional awkward pause—because it's the big show
THE GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS
The Golden Globe Awards are annual honors presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, recognizing outstanding achievements in film and television.Often a precursor to the Academy Awards, it’s Hollywood’s annual fancy dinner party. Stars swap their movie roles for stunning gowns, tuxedos, and questionable dancing. It’s a mix of glamorous award-giving, awkward speeches, surprise winners, and plenty of memorable quotes. Basically, it’s like a giant game of “Who’s the coolest celebrity tonight?”
THE DIRECTORS AND PRODUCERS GUILD OF AMERICA AWARDS
The Directors Guild of America Awards is a backstage pass to the world of film and TV, where directors trade their clipboards for trophies. Directors are recognized for their creative leadership and vision in bringing stories to life across a range of media, followed by humbly graceful “I didn’t expect this” speeches. Similarly, The Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards recognize top producers in film, TV, and digital media. It's the night when the quiet powerhouses of entertainment get to shine in the glitzy world of celebrities, proving that without them, we’d all just be watching a lot of blank screens. The PGA Awards are also an important predictor for the Oscars, especially for Best Picture.
THE WRITERS GUILD OF AMERICA AWARDS
The Writers Guild of America Awards is like the Oscars for the people who make the words happen—minus the sparkly gowns and dramatic performances. The ceremony honors screenwriters and their contributions to storytelling. Over the years there have been many standing ovations for creating those iconic lines we quote at parties (even if we can’t remember the whole quote). The awards on this night are seen as key indicators for the Oscars, especially in screenplay categories.
THE RAZZIE AWARDS
The Razzie Awards offer Hollywood’s quirky tribute to films and performances that didn’t quite hit the mark. It’s a playful evening where over-the-top acting, cringeworthy scripts, and outrageous explosions take center stage, all with a wink, a laugh, and a golden raspberry-shaped trophy. Serving as a lighthearted counterpart to prestigious ceremonies like the Oscars (with a touch of champagne-fueled chaos), the Razzies are typically held the day before.
THE TONY AWARDS
The Tony Awards are the theatre's glittering night to shine, highlighting the best of Broadway—whether it's musicals, plays, or performances. Hosted every year, the ceremony celebrates work in categories like Best Musical, Best Play, Best Actor, and Best Director. It's a star-studded event full of drama, glitz, and a little bit of jazz hands, honoring the magic of live theater.
THE EMMY AWARDS
The Emmys showcase the best in TV—across drama, comedy, and everything in between—are celebrated with style and excitement. The ceremony honors standout performances, writing, and direction, all while bringing together the stars behind our favorite shows. With a blend of glitz, heartfelt moments, and just the right amount of competition, the Emmys are a glamorous celebration of TV’s impact on culture and storytelling. It's a night where small-screen legends are made, and the magic of television gets its moment in the spotlight.
THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS
The People’s Choice Awards allows the public to vote for their favorite entertainment across a wide range of categories, including film, television, music, and pop culture. Unlike other award shows, which are determined by industry professionals, the People’s Choice Awards celebrates the preferences and tastes of the audience. This fan-driven recognition highlights the most popular and influential stars, shows, and performances of the year, making it a significant reflection of public opinion in the entertainment industry. It’s the one award show where your Instagram likes really count.
CRITIC'S CHOICE AWARDS
The Critics' Choice Awards are presented by film and TV critics, recognizing the best in both film and television. This prestigious event honors outstanding performances, direction, and productions, offering a critical perspective on the year’s top achievements in entertainment. It serves as a respected mark of approval from industry experts for exceptional work. This is also one of the first events to kick off the season, the stakes are high on this show.
HOSTS WITH THE MOST
At award shows, hosts guide the event, entertain the audience with jokes, introduce presenters, and keep the show moving smoothly. Some of the most iconic hosts include Bob Hope, who hosted the Oscars a record 19 times, Ellen DeGeneres, known for her unforgettable selfie at the Oscars, and Ricky Gervais, infamous for his bold and often controversial hosting of the Golden Globes. Each brought their unique flair, making the night memorable for both the audience, nominees and viewers at home.

DRESS TO IMPRESS
Award show red carpets are the ultimate fashion runway, where celebrities showcase their style and poise while photographers snap every moment. Stars often collaborate with top designers such as Chanel, Versace, and Dior to curate their look. Celebrities work closely with these designers, sometimes even customizing outfits to reflect their personality or the theme of the event, ensuring they turn heads and make a statement before the night’s big awards. But while the red carpet is all about glamour, wardrobe malfunctions—like a slipped strap or a torn seam—can sometimes steal the spotlight, adding an unexpected dose of drama to an otherwise perfect evening. The red carpet is as much about the fashion as it is about the celebration of talent, so don't make the worst dressed list.
THE BEST OF THE BEST TO THE WORST OF THE WORST
Let’s take a closer look at some of the most prestigious (or at least notable) awards up for grabs.
OUTSTANDING (ACTOR/ACTRESS) IN A SERIES
The Outstanding Actor/Actress in a Series is awarded at the Emmys to the best performer in a television series, recognizing exceptional acting in a lead role. Over the years it has crossed genres and continues to be the most sought after award in TV.
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
The Academy Award for Best Animated Feature goes to the movie that proves cartoons aren’t just for kids, delivering epic visuals and stories that tug at your heartstrings. It’s the Oscar that celebrates everything from talking animals to fantastical worlds—basically, the award for the film that makes you believe anything is possible.
MOVIE OF THE YEAR
The People’s Choice Award for Movie of the Year is the ultimate fan-voted honor, recognizing the film that captured everyone’s heart and dominated the box office. It’s the “people’s pick” of the movie world, celebrating the film that audiences will be quoting and rewatching on repeat.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
The Directors Guild of America Lifetime Achievement award honors directors who have made significant and lasting contributions to the film and television industry throughout their careers. It recognizes their exceptional work, influence, and creative vision, celebrating their impact on the art of storytelling and inspiring future generations of filmmakers.
WORST PICTURE
This unique achievement is given out at The Golden Raspberry Awards each year to the film considered the absolute worst. It’s a humorous, satirical honor for the most criticized, often cheesy or poorly made movies, poking fun at the fact that not every film can be a hit.
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
The Academy Award for Best Original Score honors the composer who’s made your movie experience even more unforgettable with the perfect soundtrack. It’s the Oscar for the music that makes you feel all the feels, whether it’s a heart-pounding chase scene or a tear-jerking moment.
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
The Writers Guild of America's Best Original Screenplay Award recognizes the best script that is entirely the work of the writer, not based on pre-existing material. It’s the honor given to those who can create worlds and characters from scratch—because sometimes, the best ideas really do come from out of nowhere.
BEST MUSICAL
The Tony Award for Best Musical is given to the top new musical on Broadway, recognizing excellence in performance, songwriting, and production. It’s the ultimate honor for a musical that captures hearts, much like Hamilton did when Lin-Manuel Miranda famously wrote, "I am not throwin' away my shot!"
CINEMATIC AND BOX OFFICE ACHIEVEMENT
The Golden Globe Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement highlights a winner that has not only achieved critical success but also performed exceptionally well at the box office. It celebrates a movie's widespread popularity and financial impact, acknowledging both its artistic merit and commercial success. It’s all about those ticket sales.

BEST PICTURE
The Academy Award for Best Picture is the most prestigious honor at the Oscars, awarded to the film that is deemed the best of the year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It recognizes excellence in filmmaking, including direction, acting, writing, and overall production. Some of the most significant winners include Titanic (1998), The Godfather (1972), Schindler's List (1993), Forrest Gump (1994), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004), and Parasite (2020), each representing landmark achievements in cinema.
