HALLOWEEN HORRORS

"Reader beware, you're in for a scare"
Tis the season to be screaming, and we're in the most killer October of our lives.

This year, we're celebrating 20 years of the first SAW movie, and the 50th anniversary of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, two spooky staples that have terrified audiences all these years. In honour of these frightfully fantastic movies, we're here to pair you with your perfect Halloween Horror movie, and where to find them*.

*Availability by platform may vary by location.

Aries

Ash Williams, bloodied and face down on the floor, stares at a fireplace poker than has landed next to his face. He stares in horror at the instrument that missed his head.

The Evil Dead (1981)
Where to watch: Prime Video, Crave

Bold and relentless, this campy cult classic is perfect for any Aries. If you've ever wondered how your friends see you, look no further than anti-hero Ash Williams. While he may be brazen, he's not afraid to fight for what he loves.

Capricorn

Thomasin, looking slightly disheveled, carries a lantern into the darkness. She looks fearful as she explores the farm.

The Witch (2015)
Where to watch: Prime Video

This spooky slow-burn keeps you in suspense from start to finish. It's a good thing you're patient, because sitting in the eerie silence would be tough for some, but the end result is worth the wait.

Pisces

Amelia and Samuel sit across from each other at the dinner table. All of the colour in the room is muted, including the black and white checkered floor, and the black and white table and chairs.

The Babadook (2014)
Where to watch: Netflix, Prime Video

You crave a movie that will keep you on your toes and keep your brain moving - you're really into the modern elevated horror model. A creature feature that keeps you guessing? Sign every Pisces up immediately.

Scorpio

Freddy, smiles his terrifying smile, waving his gloved hand menacingly.

Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Where to watch: Crave, Prime Video

On top of the impeccable Freddy one-liners, the 80s style, and brutal kills - you can find a lot of Scorpio traits in our final girl Nancy, and if the urge for a whole movie night hits you, you've got six other movies after the first!

Leo

Dani (Florence Pugh) sits covered in flowers as the "May Queen", pouting as she weeps over prior events.

Midsommar (2019)
Where to watch: Paramount+, Prime Video

While finding the spotlight comes late for Dani, it's something every Leo loves. This creepy travel tale isn't everyone's cup of tea, but in the hit or miss category, this is sure to be a hit with Leos.

Libra

Grace (Nicole Kidman) shields her kids as they all stare out the window, afraid of whatever is on the other side.

The Others (2001)
Where to watch: Crave, Prime Video

A classic ghost story with horrifying kids and a mother who doesn't believe them, it's peak creepy. While this may not be the gruesome tale for some others, the bold choices this movie makes are perfect for Libra.

Virgo

The Graham family are sat around the dinner table, looking removed from each other while sitting at the same table. From left to right: Charlie, Annie, Steve, Peter.

Hereditary (2018)
Where to watch: Netflix, Prime Video

As someone with a keen eye for detail, Hereditary will keep you on your toes from start to finish. Combine beautiful cinematography with a roller coaster of a story and you're in for a movie night that will have you sleeping with the lights on for weeks.

Taurus

The Grady Twins, wearing light blue dresses with pink bows, stand side by side at the end of a long hallway with blue carpet, and blue floral wallpaper.

The Shining (1980)
Where to watch: Crave, Prime Video

One of the scariest movies of its time with horrifying imagery and perfect pacing. Every room is something new, and will have you wide-eyed and on the edge of your seat.

Sagittarius

Chucky (doll, no cuts or injury) stands in Andy's window frame, his arms are extended as if to say "ta-da"

Child's Play (1988)
Where to Watch: Prime Video

What was it that the infamous doll said? "A true classic never goes out of style"? Same can be said of this iconic horror movie. Wit and humour with the things that make a slasher special make this the perfect movie for any Sagittarius.

And before you say it, yes, I know the quote is from Bride of Chucky- but the statement stands.

Aquarius

A group of young people stand in the living room of the cabin, staring in horror at something off screen.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Where to watch: Prime Video, Crave

You think you know where a movie is headed, until you don't. This unlikely creature feature is not only smart, but good for a laugh from time-to-time. And a young Chris Hemsworth? What more do you need!

Gemini

Stu and Billy hold Randy threateningly as they accuse him of the heinous acts being committed in Woodsboro.

Scream (1996)
Where to watch: Paramount+, Prime Video

The start of something great. One of horror's finest that keeps first-time watchers guessing because as Randy puts it "everyone's a suspect". Like your average Gemini, our final girl Sidney goes from horrified to hero to protect the people she cares about, a duality you can all relate to.

Cancer

A crowd cheers at the thanksgiving parade. In the foreground, a turkey mascot marches.

Thanksgiving (2023)
Where to watch: Netflix, Crave

You sure can hold a grudge, but only when it's justified. This tale of revenge is not for the faint of heart, but boy, oh,boy, is it a thrill ride. A combination of creativity and creeps only Eli Roth could create.
