MEET M BLACKBURN

Can you tell us about your first cosplay?

My first cosplay was Fiona the Human from Adventure Time in 2013.

Do you have a cosplay piece that you are most proud of?

I’m pretty proud of my Sailor Uranus sword, but my wigs are where my love shines! My Tracer wig, my Akira wig, and my Amity wig are things I’m really proud of.

What do you hope to achieve through cosplay?

I want to inspire people, man! I mean, recognition for my work is really cool and I’m super grateful for every compliment, but being an inspiration for younger LGBTQ+ kids is so important to me. As a non-binary person who didn’t have a lot of people to look up to that were non-binary, to give someone that would mean the world to me.

Is there a cosplayer that you look up to or inspires you?

Oh, plenty! My best friend Bekah Lee (@opalescentteacup) is an award winning costumer and one of my favorite folks in the world.

If you could give any piece of advice to new cosplayers, what would it be?

Start small! If you bite off more than you can chew, you might get really disappointed and hard on yourself for “failing”. So start feasible and small! Also - use thrift shops!

What would you say is the hardest part of cosplaying?

I guess at this point, it’s finding the time and money to make and acquire the things I need for cosplay. But that’s just being a college student I guess!

In honor of spooky season, what are you being for Halloween?

Halloween is EVERYDAY for me! I work at a Halloween store and leave up my creepy decorations year round. This year I’ll probably be working Halloween but will go in costume - so maybe as Beetlejuice or a sheet ghost!
