Team Picks: What Are You Playing?

Here at FAN EXPO HQ, our team is always nerding out over the world of fandom. On Team Picks, we share some of our favorite things we’ve been watching, reading and playing. This month, we’re exploring what the team is playing right now.

While it can be fun to debate which game is best for any given system or year, what matters at the end of the day is having fun. Any genre, be it action, strategy, or RPG can be the right game for any given occasion.

Today we’re going to find out what games the FAN EXPO team are currently playing (and why).

Super Mario World (and Others)

Right now, what I’m playing is Super Mario World (and so many others)! The new Nintendo Switch update has my reliving my childhood. Classic Kirby? The very first Mario Kart? Donkey Kong Country? My 90’s kid heart is so happy right now.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

The obsession has been real since 2011 when Star Wars: The Old Republic first released. I remember rushing home after school so I could jump on my Sith Marauder and fight for the Empire! 10 years later, the love I have for this game is just as strong, just like the Force.

Tekken 7

I’m playing Tekken 7. I’ll admit, it’s not the easiest game; there’s so many mechanics and combos to remember that it can be overwhelming, if not frustrating. However, Tekken has always had a special place in my heart ever since my dad introduced it to 4-year old me with Tekken 3. While I’m not much better than I was back then, the series is still a ton of fun to play by myself or with friends, especially since my favorite characters (Nina Williams, Jin Kazama) are still here.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I picked up Breath of the Wild again--I'm going back and finally trying to fully upgrade all the different pieces of armor. That requires getting tons of different materials from around the map, trying to find easy ways to get rare things to generate, and lots of things like that. It sounds like a grind (and it is) but it's also a series of mini puzzles in a way, and it's a good re-entry point for the massive world that I haven't stepped back into for a while before now.

Epic Mickey

I just finished replaying Epic Mickey. It’s not a long play-through but it’s so fun. You play as Mickey Mouse exploring ‘Wasteland’ – an animated world filled with all of Walt Disney’s unused or long-forgotten characters. Leading the world is Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (fun fact: Oswald is the OG Mickey until Disney lost the rights) who is bitter that Mickey stole his spotlight all those years ago. Mickey uses a Magic Paintbrush to repair the damaged old world and fight off bad guys like the Mad Doctor. I mainly just love the series because it brought Oswald back into mainstream (at least a little).
