Team Picks: Filmed in Canada

Here at the FAN EXPO HQ, our team is always nerding out over the world of fandom. On Team Picks, we share some of our favorite things we’ve been watching, reading and playing. This month, to celebrate Canada Day, we’re diving into the wide catalogue of movies filmed in Canada.

So many directors choose to film scenes or whole movies in Canada, taking advantage of the misty forests of Vancouver, the open expanses of the Rockies, or the bustling streets of Toronto. Those choices not only make us proud, but there’s no doubt they make the movies better: it’s beautiful country up here.

Today, we’re each picking our favourite movies that were filmed right here in Canada.

X2

Three X-men characters from the comic movie franchise

Lizzie
Project Coordinator

There are SO many amazing flicks that have been filmed in Canada. Some of my favourites are Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (Toronto, ON), Inception (Kananaskis, AB), and Mean Girls (Toronto, ON). However, the movie that immediately came to mind was X2 (BC & AB). Maybe it’s because I enjoy driving to Barrier Lake (AKA Alkali Lake) just to say, “the tricky thing about adamantium is that if you ever manage to process its raw, liquid form, you got to keep it that way, keep it hot".

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

I'd have to say my favourite movie filmed in Canada is Scott Pilgrim vs. The World! I love that the movie is filmed in Toronto so I can watch and point out different spots that I've been to. It's also kind of nostalgic because a lot of the places in that movie are no longer there, like Honest Ed's. Also, the cast and soundtrack are awesome!

Mean Girls

Marcus
Social Media Coordinator

It’s a classic that can't be remade or beat. The literal mold for all things high school petty drama, brash comedy, and I'll say it … cheugy.

Also Mean Girls

Alan
Project Manager

[Editor’s Note: Yes, again. What can we say? We love Mean Girls and we won’t apologize for that.]
It’s not only one of the best comedies ever made, but it's a lovely experience for Torontonians. You can watch the film playing the catch-the-Toronto/Ontario-landmark game (plus, you can make it a drinking game if you want). I'll bet you you'll be surprised by the amount of recognizable locations.

Juno

Juno character from movie Juno wearing large sunglasses and smoking pipe

Quinn
Social Media Coordinator

I’m picking Juno. I know it’s very much of its time, but I don’t think it aged that badly—the performances are all top-notch, the cast is full of Canadians, the whole thing feels like Vancouver (because it is) even though it’s supposed to be Minnesota. It’s charming, heartfelt, and more than a little quirky, and that’s why Juno gets the top spot.

Good Will Hunting

Al
Operations Coordinator

I pick Good Will Hunting! Sure, parts of it were filmed in Boston, but a lot of the movie was also filmed in Toronto—more specifically, very close to where I was living at the time it came out.
