Cosplayer Of The Month - 221bdisney (Emily)

Welcome to Cosplayer of the Month, where we feature an incredible cosplayer from our community of fans and learn about who they are beneath the surface and, ahem, WORBLA. This month, we have 221bdisney (Emily)!

What city are you based in?

Orlando, Florida

Can you tell us about your first cosplay?

I actually didn’t know there was a term for it, I honestly thought it was “reenacting” when I started! I used to have these amazing Harry Potter parties during my high school years with my friends and I would dress up as Harry. When I found that cosplay was a thing, I really got into it, then Sherlock from BBC Sherlock came to follow!

Do you have a cosplay piece that you are most proud of?

It’s a tie between my Doctor Strange Cloak, my Frodo Baggins cosplay, and my Barbara Minerva spiked jacket. The Doctor Strange cloak took months to make! And as for Frodo, I really tried to be as authentic as possible when gathering the fabrics and pieces to make them my own.

What do you hope to achieve through cosplay?

I hope that my cosplay brings people together who share a passion for the same stories as I do.

If you could give any piece of advice to new cosplayers, what would it be?

Cosplay is about sharing stories we all love and coming together to celebrate them. Never let yourself be held back by people who may not understand why you cosplay (don’t worry there are plenty of people who understand!) Don’t cosplay for someone else—Cosplay for yourself. Cosplay a character you love and start with that.

You can cosplay whoever you want to, no matter how much make-up, sewing talents, or budget, cosplay is about expressing the love you have for your favorite characters and being a part of a community of creativity, love, and storytelling.

Are there any local cosplayers that you look up to or inspire you?

Alyson Tabbitha and Lis Wonder and of course my dearest friend Littleboffin!

In honor of Mother’s Day, who would you consider your “cosplay mom”?

I am the Cosplay Mom! I’m the one with the extra Bobby pins, snacks, safety pins— you name it, it’s probably in my bag somewhere.
