FREAKIER FRIDAY
THEY’RE BACK FOR A FREAQUAL
Can you believe it's been two decades since Freaky Friday was released? We can't. Now it's getting a sequel—and with it a remixed version of the heartwarming body-swap story that was such a hit for many of us, and some new elements that are sure to excite and give us a good giggle.
In the 2003 Disney film, we saw Lindsay Lohan as 16-year-old Anna and Jamie Lee Curtis as her mom, Tess, accidentally switch bodies after an earthquake-inducing experience with a pair of fortune cookies. This time around, Anna and Tess are older, and Anna is even a mother herself, but have they really learned their lesson? Now they are blending two families and have two more teenage girls in the mix at odds with their parents. Things are about to get freaky, nostalgic, and hilarious.
NEW AND FAMILIAR FREAKY FAVES
Jamie Lee Curtis as Tess Coleman
In Freaky Friday Tess Coleman, a widowed mother and psychiatrist, was portrayed as a somewhat uptight and controlling figure, focused on her career and navigating the challenges of raising a teenage daughter alone. She was engaged to be married while juggling a book release, and was seemingly the pinnacle of the classic girl boss trope. When she swaps bodies with her daughter Anna, she learns to loosen up and even fakes an epic guitar solo, finally able to relate to her daughter and move on from her previous marriage and start a new family. In Freakier Friday, we have the opportunity to enjoy her observing Anna go through the same struggles she dealt with all those years ago. Let's see if Tess remembers to keep it cool in the sequel.
Lindsay Lohan as Anna Coleman
Freaky Friday introduced us to Anna Coleman. She was your typical angsty teenager, feeling misunderstood and frustrated, especially with her mother's attempts to control her friends and dating life. She was part of a band on the rise called Pink Slip and expressed her feelings through her music, which her family tries to support but often stifles. Her style is iconic, and any teen growing up in 2003 aspired to capture her rocker vibe, complete with chunky highlighted hair. In the new movie, we can expect her to drop her edgy look in place of a mature, professional appearance like her mother Tess (who would have expected that!). We are excited to see how this cool girl turned cool mom will navigate this lesson a second time around.
Julia Butters as Harper Coleman
In the new film Julia plays Harper, Anna's daughter and Tess' granddaughter. She is going through a very similar situation to her on-screen mother in Freaky Friday - the formation of a new family, an engagement and teenage troubles are causing tension. We can tell from the behind-the-scenes interviews and trailers that Harper is due for a dose of maternal magic, as her relationship with her new step-sis is anything but ideal. The lines we have heard so far are very reminiscent of Anna’s in the first film, and if she's anything like the women before her there will be some serious scheming. Freakier Friday teases the idea that she will be swapping bodies with her mother, Anna... Here we go again.
Sophia Hammons as Lily Davies
Sophia will be playing the daughter of Eric Davies (Manny Jacinto) in Freakier Friday, joining the Coleman family as Anna's new stepdaughter. Teased for her English accent, she is immediately at odds with her new stepsister-to-be Harper Coleman. They only seem to see eye to eye on one thing - using the body swap to their advantage to split up their parents before the wedding. While her specific role is not yet known, we cannot wait to see how the dynamic between her and the other three body-switching women goes. It's going to be a wild ride, innit?
Chad Michael Murray as Jake
In Freaky Friday, Chad Michael Murray plays sensitive bad-boy Jake, the motorcycle-riding romantic interest of Anna Coleman. He's initially depicted as a typical high school heartthrob; however, after a body-swap spell between Anna and her mother, Jake finds himself attracted to Tess. In Freakier Friday, he reprises his role as Anna's high school boyfriend and has developed a deeper backstory, with Murray imagining him as having a secret admiration for Tess. Here's hoping we see him out on the lawn, boombox in hand, singing "Baby One More Time"... one more time.
Ryan Malgarini as Harry Coleman
In Freaky Friday Harry Coleman is a somewhat mischievous and often annoying younger brother who frequently clashes with Anna. From sneaking into her room to play her guitar to hanging out with grandpa and dropping some hilarious banter - he is often the target of teenage Anna's outbursts. He is set to appear in Freakier Friday, though his specific role or storyline remains to be seen. As an adult, it's interesting to imagine the new dynamic between him and his older sis. We hope he reprises his impersonation of a walrus.
Manny Jacinto as Eric Davies
Manny plays Eric Davies, Anna's new fiancé, Lily's father, and Harper's soon-to-be stepfather in the upcoming film. As a new addition to the cast, he might be to Freakier Friday what Mark Harmon was to Freaky Friday. He is entering the emotional storm of teenage girls vs their mother, with his own daughter in the mix. While his role is that of a fiancé, not much more detail has been revealed about his character's personality or storyline. Since his daughter has an English accent, we are wondering if he will too? Only time will tell.
Mark Harmon as Ryan
In the first film Mark plays Ryan, who is often portrayed as a sensitive and somewhat clueless character who struggles to connect with his future stepdaughter. He eventually wins Anna over by advocating for her passion for music at the end of Freaky Friday. He serves as the only voice of reason in the first film and is a major reason the ladies are able to swap bodies back when he convinces Tess (who is actually Anna) that her daughter's music career does matter and he wants nothing more than her success. He's, in Anna's words, a pretty cool dude. We are confident he will bring much needed normalcy to Freakier Friday.
Haley Hudson as Peg
In Freaky Friday, Haley Hudson plays Peg, a member of the band Pink Slip and a close friend of Anna. She's an advocate for Anna to break all of Tess's rules, and even shows up with the band to kidnap Anna from the Coleman rehearsal dinner to play a gig at the House of Blues. You've got to love a good supporting character, and Peg is returning to the cast in Freakier Friday to surely support her friend and possibly participate in the antics. We are happy to see a familiar face, especially since she's not doing any body swaps.

What can we expect?
A lot of time has passed since Tess and Anna endured an identity crisis, and life looks a whole lot different, yet presents similar problems. Anna now has a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter, not to mention a wedding to plan. Just like Freaky Friday, they must overcome the challenges that arise when two families merge, with two wild teens taking full advantage of adult privileges. It involves a four-way body swap, a kooky fortune teller, the same loveable family and some new additions. Will Tess and Anna discover that lightning - or at least cookie-caused earthquakes - might strike twice? Friday is about to get freaky... again.
Most Memorable Moments from Freaky Friday
“I’m OLD! Oh, I’m like the Cryptkeeper!”
Upon waking up and realizing she is in the wrong body, Anna has a total melt down. Not only is this one of the most quoted moments in the movie, the image of Jamie Lee Curtis looking in the mirror has become a meme in it's own right.
“Like cooking: I mean, have you never heard of takeout? And cleaning: let's don't and say we did. Quality time with your kids: You know what? Quit bugging 'em. Leave 'em alone. They like it!”
Anna (in Tess's body) replies to a baffled interviewer when she is forced onto live TV to promote her mother's book.
“When you get your body back, it's grounded.”
We all might hide things from our parents as teens, who would ever expect them to be put in your position and discover the truth? When Tess finds a secret piercing on Anna while in her body, her mom flips.
“Root canal? That's not fair, they're not my teeth!”
Anna is finally learning what it takes to be a super mom like Tess when they swap bodies. Difficult clients, wedding catering, and dental work? PASS!
Tess (in Anna's body): “I look like Stevie Nicks.” Anna (in Tess's body): “Who's he?”
This is a perfect representation of the differing taste Anna and Tess have. Not only is this line hilarious, it truly encapsulates how challenging it can be to relate to your teenagers as a parent.
Ryan: “I'm not really a prying kind of guy, but just for the heck of it, I was wondering what you were doing on the eve of our wedding straddling some guy on the back of a big black Harley?” Anna (in Tess's body): “Hello, it was a Ducati!”
No comment needed- this was hysterical.
