Team Picks: Star Trek Aliens - Sight Unseen

Here at the FAN EXPO HQ, our team is always nerding out over the world of fandom. On Team Picks, we share some of our favorite things we’ve been watching, reading, and playing. This month, we’re diving into the wide and varied world of Star Trek aliens.

Listen, we’d love to be able to tell you that every single one of us here at FAN EXPO knows every single Star Trek alien that has ever been shown or referenced--and some of us definitely do! But some members of the team have yet to learn their Vulcans from their Tamarians, or their Romulans from their Klingons.

To help them out, we’ve played a little game: each of the following team members was told the name of a different type of Star Trek alien. Without googling it, they had to describe and draw that alien.

Let’s see how they did in this month’s picks:

Operations Coordinator

Her guess: Well, obviously, a ‘Kelp’ien is decorated in Kelp, so they’ve definitely got a Swamp Thing vibe. They have terrible back problems because of the heavy wet kelp they drag around all day, and they’re creepy and aggressive, at first, but once you get to know them they’re absolute sweethearts and will always invite you in for a cup of tea.

Actual: Kelpiens have tall, lanky bodies, orange skin, and no facial hair. When threatened, small spines extend from the back of their heads. They don’t cover themselves in kelp, but they do harvest it.

His guess: The name made me think of two things: porcupines and pickles. I ended up starting with porcupine quills around the face and then added scales. The teeth are rough, like flat cubed mountains.

Actual: Pakled are humanoid creatures with distinctive swooping patches of hair on their foreheads. They also have folds and bumps of skin underneath their eyes and underneath their lips.

Social Media Coordinator

Her guess: I thought about a classic alien: tall, gangly arms, with a large oval head. My version has no ears, nose, or mouth, but it does have big blue eyes.

Actual: The Jem’Hadar are genetically engineered reptilian humanoid beings. Their skin is typically a blue-gray colour, with ridges, scales, and horns running along their faces.

Customer Service Coordinator

Her guess:
I literally have no idea. I know it’s “Son’a”, but my brain went to “sun”, so I was thinking that they might look like a very bright sort of lion looking creature with lightning bolts for arms.

Actual: The major distinguishing feature of the Son’a are the long, stretched lines of skin on their face. These aren’t exactly naturally occurring—they’re the result of genetic manipulation and surgical techniques to make them look younger. That’s a bold skincare regime.
