Team Picks: Character Refresh

Here at the FAN EXPO HQ, our team is always nerding out over the world of fandom. On Team Picks, we share some of our favorite things we’ve been watching, reading and playing. This month, we’re talking about which characters and movies could use a reboot in 2021.

Writers and directors make all kinds of choices about how to bring a character or movie to life, and some of those choices are bad choices. Or, at the very least, some of those choices don’t bring out the full potential in those stories.

A new year means a new chance for some of these stories to be told again, but better this time. We’ve got some ideas on how to do that, so here they are in this month’s picks:

Poison Ivy

Marcus
Social Media Coordinator

Poison Ivy is a long-running Batman villain, and yet the only live-action iterations have been Uma Thurman (movie, Batman & Robin) and Peyton List (TV, Gotham). Peyton List did a good job, and Uma Thurman did great for such a campy rendition, but I need something more current and more true to the character for a new movie adaptation. I wouldn't mind seeing the character get a similar treatment to that of Riddler from Matt Reeves' The Batman (2022). If the issue is the CGI or logistics of her powers, make her a bio-chemist/eco-villain without the plant bending. I'd still pay money to see that.

Elektra

Jabbari
Copywriter

Elektra deserves a reboot. She was the only good thing about the original Ben Affleck Daredevil movie. Shortly after that, she got a spin-off that is so bad, everyone probably forgot about it till I brought it up just now. It should be noted, there was an interesting thing happening in the Daredevil TV series, but that also was ... meh overall. So, this year or the next, I demand more assassins with sais and above-average acting to go along with it. She has too many great comic runs for the capitalist society that is the film industry not to use. Enough is enough.

2020

Lizzie
Operations Coordinator

My 2020 experience deserves a reboot. All of ours do! Who’s up for a re-do?

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Quinn
Social Media Coordinator

We don’t speak of the live-action ATLA adaptation. It took itself way too seriously, tried to cover too much ground, had some serious casting missteps, changed the pronunciation of the main characters’ names (!!!), and just didn’t capture the real heart of the amazing animated series. We deserve a live-action series that gets the tone and the details right.
