FAN MEETUPS RECAP: The Music of Disney on Broadway
Written By Heather Bedor (Fan Meetups Ambassador, Orlando Chapter)
When I tell you that words can't describe my level of excitement when MEGACON Orlando asked me to host an in-person event at one of my favorite places (The Dr. Phillips Center), celebrating one of my favorite fandoms (Disney), and enjoy it in one of my favorite formats (Broadway). I mean it! If you haven't had the chance to go to the FrontYard Festival at The Dr. Phillips Center, run, don't walk to their next event, Disney Movie Night: Pirates of The Caribbean. I asked my mom if she would like to accompany me to the record breaking performance of Disney Broadway Stars. And yes, it was record breaking, we were attending the ONLY Broadway show in the entire country! We were extremely impressed with how smooth their entry was, walking through temperature checks and security checks with ease. Then we were personally escorted to our private box with a fantastic view of both the stage and the large video projection screens. I noticed that they even have accessible boxes with ramps, so now we know we can bring my stepdad. The escort then instructed us on how to order food (by scanning the QR code) or we could walk to the food vendors. It was awesome to see the locally owned and operated restaurants that were offering our meal options for the evening. We chose to walk the venue and check it all out. On our self-guided tour we discovered the second entrance and valet, the extremely clean restroom options, a merchandise booth with blankets and seat cushions, and took in all of the smells of yummy food and even partook in the bar offerings as well! Mom chose a delicious burger with gorgonzola and tomato jam while I opted for an ooey gooey truffle Grilled Cheese. We went back to our seats and our food was served quickly and fresh! The show started promptly and wow was it a chilly night! The performers were on their game and it was such a feeling to be sharing this experience with a "yard" full of strangers of all ages, all singing Disney songs at the top of their lungs. I don't think Mom or I stopped singing or smiling the entire time. It was such a nice change from watching specials online or participating in a Zoom event. Don't get me wrong, I adore meeting MEGACON fans from all over virtually, but the in-person experiences I have the absolute honor of hosting can't be beat!
