Team Picks: Godzilla vs. King Kong

Here at the FAN EXPO HQ, our team is always nerding out over the world of fandom. On Team Picks, we share some of our favorite things we’ve been watching, reading and playing. This month, we’re taking sides on the most anticipated monster match-up of the year: Godzilla vs. King Kong.

In this corner: the sea lizard you never see coming, the reptile with the nuclear tummy, the creature you better not litter in front of … it’s Godzilla, King of Monsters!

In this corner: the angry ape, the perfect punching machine, the creature who time and geography forgot … it’s King Kong!

Two enter, one survives. We place bets in this month’s picks:

King Kong

Senior Operations Manager

I’m going with the big monkey on this one. He seems way more agile, so I think he could get a lot more opportunities to re-position and knock Godzilla out.

My money’s on Godzilla. He just seems way more versatile to me, and the consequences of getting hit by one of his attacks is way worse. Get hit by King Kong? It’s a punch, we generally know what kind of damage that can do. Get hit by a giant tail whip or by atomic breath? It’s difficult to imagine getting hit by one of those and not being out of commission for a while.

Godzilla. I'd love to drop a controversial opinion, but l mean, the argument for King Kong winning is all null and void. King Kong got taken out by helicopters and if you don't subscribe to that, he's not even the biggest deal on Skull Island. Meanwhile, Godzilla is a walking nuclear plant and battles countless monsters on top of his greatest feat: leaving behind a sustainable level of collateral damage that somehow never bankrupts Japan. We love a mindful King of the Monsters.

At the end of the day, we all know that both Godzilla and King Kong are going to die in their own petty war. But Mothra, Queen of the Monsters (and my heart) is an eternal being that can never die (as long as it avoids bright lamps).
