Rendez-View The Suicide Squad

Written By: Marcus Munoz

They’re dying to save the world! The Suicide Squad returns to the big screen, ready to take on dictators, alien creatures and internet trolls. Strap in, this movie is going to blow your mind.

BACK IN ACTION

DC takes another stab at The Suicide Squad four years after its lackluster first run. This time, recruiting Guardians of the Galaxy Director, James Gunn. The mission at hand: make it funny, make it gory, and make it POP (if you know what I mean). Accompanied by returning favorites Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and Col. Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), The Suicide Squad brings a fresh take to the franchise, enlisting A-list actors to play D-list villains. It’ll make you cry, it’ll make you cringe, and it’ll make you say - Who the f*** is Bloodsport?! Take a look at our review of The Suicide Squad - just try not to lose your head.

STANDOUT SQUAD MEMBERS

RATCATCHER 2

You wouldn’t think the character with the strangest superpower would survive this movie, let alone be its breakout star. Dubbed the “heart of the team” by James Gunn, Daniela Malcheor’s portrayal of Ratcatcher 2 (not to be confused with Ratcatcher OG) blends together the perfect amount of relatability, heart and humor to make her one of DC fans most talked about on screen characters. Ratcatcher was first introduced in the DC Detective Comics issue. #588 as one of Batman’s low ranking villains. With the ability to control the minds of rats, Ratcatcher is often overlooked as bearing little to no threat - making them perfect for the Suicide Squad! In Gunn’s interpretation, Ratcatcher 2 not only diffuses that assumption, but makes her the key to defeating the main antagonist, Starro.

King Shark

After months of mystery, it was finally revealed that action star Sylvester Stallone was to voice the role of Nanawe aka King Shark. Fans weren’t sure what to expect from the character as the previous brutish squad creature Killer Croc left much to be desired in the previous film. However, with the success of King Sharks portrayal in the Harley Quinn animated series - fans were eager to see what James Gunn could bring to the character on the big screen… Spoiler, he did not disappoint. King Shark may be the muscle, but he is certainly more than that. He is as much the comic relief as he is the fearsome shark demi-god we know and love from the comics. Missing his computer savvy skills and quick wit - Gunn opts for the more aloof and tender interpretation of the character - and we love him all the same.

Polka-Dot Man

Probably one of DC’s most overlooked characters, Polka-Dot Man, played by David Dastmalchian (king of the superhero multiverse IYKYK) - was definitely a major highlight in the Suicide Squad. Although he didn’t contribute much in terms of fighting, he certainly made up for in comedy. A character like this should be goofy and awkward. As an added bonus, Gunn also made Polka-Dot Man kind of OP? His polka-dots acted as plasma projectiles that could melt through anything! Turned out to be a fun little twist on the character. Sadly, in the final act of the film we lose the fun hearted hero in a crushing blow by Starro - as James Gunn said, “don’t get attached”.

Best Moments

The Deaths

When I saw the announcement of returning cast members Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnaman, I was ecstatic! Even more so seeing the inclusion of Peter Capaldi and Michael Rooker. Sadly, their time is short lived as they all eventually meet their gruesome demise whether by a futile mission or the nano-explosive in their skull. Though shocking, I did appreciate the risks Gunn was willing to take with a few fan faves.

The Feels

To my surprise - and I’m sure many others - there was actually a lot of heartfelt moments, especially with Bloodsport, Ratcatcher 2, and King Shark. Gunn was seamlessly able to provide enough backstory that you felt emotionally invested in their survival and team dynamic. The relationship between Ratcatcher 2 and Bloodsport/King Shark was wholesome and definitely took the edge off of the more gory scenes in the film.

The Fights

Believe it or not, the final fight between the Squad and Starro wasn’t actually my favorite. It was a tie between Harley Quinn’s rampage and the Peacemaker vs. Bloodsport camp massacre. Both equally shocking, gruesome and mildly comedic - however adding a sense of uniqueness when it comes to traditional action sequences.

FINAL THOUGHTS

As much as the fans like to critique the first Suicide Squad, we have to pay respects to it for paving the way for many of our fave DCEU characters re: Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Amanda Waller and more. It is clear to many that David Ayers Suicide Squad walked so James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad could run, and run it did! The Suicide Squad is now the catalyst for a new future in the DCEU, and I’m so excited to see where the studio takes this edgy and exciting
