Team Picks: Failed Binges
Here at the FAN EXPO HQ, our team is always nerding out over the world of fandom. On Team Picks, we share some of our favorite things we’ve been watching, reading and playing. This month, we’re asking the opposite question: which TV show did you give up on and what made you bail?
We all watch things for different reasons, and sometimes even the best shows just don’t click with someone. Or they have differing tastes, or don’t have the patience to stick with a show “until it really gets good”.
Whatever the reason, here are the shows that we left at the back of our “continue watching” lists.
How I Met Your Mother
Jay
Senior Operations Manager
I gave it 5 seasons and I was still nowhere near meeting the mother and finding out who she is. So, I got impatient and gave up on it.
Schitt’s Creek
Quinn
Social Media Coordinator
For me, it was Schitt’s Creek. I got maybe 6 or 7 episodes in, so I feel good that I gave it a real shot. And I know people who love the show say to just keep going and to stick with it. But I think I just wasn’t enjoying it very much and didn’t feel like waiting all that time. The whole point is watching them slowly get better as people, but I had a hard time not being able to root for any of the family members in the meantime.
The Mandalorian
Ashley
Customer Service Coordinator
I know I’m in the minority on this one, but I didn’t make it past the first episode of The Mandalorian. Granted, I’m not deep into the Star Wars fandom—I thought the originals were okay, didn’t watch the prequels, and the newest trilogy was probably my fave so far. I really enjoyed having Rey as a strong female lead and Finn’s arc in terms of seeing the person inside the Storm Trooper helmet. That’s one of the things about The Mandalorian that didn’t hook me, actually. I think because the main character is wearing a mask the whole episode, that felt really impersonal, and I prefer seeing people.
Tiger King
Alan
Project Manager
I know it was really popular at the beginning of quarantine, but I abandoned Tiger King after the first episode. The circumstances and the characters’ values were just too sad and wrong, and it just really wasn’t the kind of thing I look for in shows.
The Haunting of Bly Manor
Caroline
Social Media Coordinator
So many people have said that The Haunting of Bly Manor is a great show. I want to be able to watch it! But when I tried, I found out that it was way too scary for me. So I had to give up for my own sanity.
