Spread Holiday Cheer with Geeky DIY Ornaments

By Lizzie Carr

With all of us being cooped inside for the holidays we’ve all run the gamut of things to do. But never fear, we’re here to inject some seasonal fun you can do at home. Yes, that means making cool ornaments. So sit down, pay close attention, and learn how to create a unique decoration that brings Baby Yoda (we’re still getting used to Grogu), Spider-Man, and more to life.

SPECIAL NOTE: Some of these you won’t get on the first time and that’s okay. Patience is key. Unless you do, in fact, own an Infinity Gauntlet then you can easily reverse time and don’t really need this, do you.

CYBERMAN

Got a big fan of Doctor Who who can relate to the cold smugness of Cyberman? Well, here’s something they can appreciate provided they are, in fact, human.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Silver ornament
  • Silver pipe cleaners
  • Glue gun
  • Black paint or marker

First, bend the silver pipe cleaners to form two sharp 90° angles at the width of the ornament. Then take the ends of the pipe cleaners on either side of the ornament and twist into tight spirals. Now, you will want to glue the spirals down on either side of the ornament.

Here comes the fun part. Draw two large circles for the eyes and make sure to add a small square sticking out at the bottom of the eye. Then draw a small rectangle for the mouth and fill in as many or as little other details of the Cyberman face, including lines of different metal features. And remember, if you make a mistake just...DELETE! DELETE!

POKÉBALL

We all know a wannabe Pokémon master. But now, through your incredible skills that you didn’t just copy from a website, you can take their catching ability to the next level.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Red ornament

  • White paint

  • Black paint or marker

  • Painters tape

Use painter's tape and tape slightly higher around the centerline of the ornament. From there, paint the bottom half of the ornament white (you may need to paint a few layers). Once the paint is dry, slowly remove the tape and you should have a crisp line where the paint stops right on the centerline of the ornament.

On the same line, draw or paint a thick black line. You’ll then want to choose the front side of the ornament, and paint a black circle in the middle of the line. Finally, paint a smaller white circle inside the black circle and… go catch ‘em all.

BB-8

In a galaxy far, far away there lies a great big rollin’ ball of joy. That ball of joy is the great, BB-8 and now he can roll on into your home.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • White Ornament

  • Orange, grey & black paint or markers

Start by painting or drawing a medium-sized circle in black in the center of the ornament. Then paint the grey and orange details, including the rings at the top of the ornament. Once the paint is dry, use a black marker and draw the outlines of the orange and grey shapes. Don’t forget to continue adding details with the black and ta-da! Keep a tight grip on the ornament as it may try to roll away.

DEATH STAR

On another side of the galaxy, there lies another great big ball. That is, one of DOOM! Thankfully this Death Star is miniaturized and can vaporize at best your carpet with a small mess.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Silver ornament

  • Black marker

NOTE: You can use any kind of silver ornament, but we decided to go extra glittery!

Now, begin by drawing a line around the center of the ornament. Then above the centerline, draw a large circle. Make this circle stand out by coloring inside the edges of the circle. Ensure that you draw lines around the ornament at a different height from the previous line. Finally, using the lines, draw boxes of different sizes. Don’t draw a thermal exhaust port if you want the ornament to stay in one piece.

BABY YODA

Oh, Baby Yoda. We still don’t know about this Grogu name thing but maybe, just maybe, with some time we can learn to accept it. However, that time… is not now. Anyways, Baby Yoda fans here’s the perfect gift for you.

Here's what you’ll need:

  • Green ornament

  • Green felt

  • Black paint or marker

  • Scissors

  • Glue gun

Cut the green felt into two leaf shapes, making sure they’re longer than the ornament. Then, bend the top end of the leaf (a.k.a. ear) over on one end and glue down. Once both ears have the crease glued, take the glued end and glue the ears on either side of the ornament. You’ll also want to paint or draw the eyes on the ornament between the ears. Grogu’s eyes are BIG and almond-shaped so keep that in mind before you commit. When you’re done that paint his nose and mouth. Now, it’s time for the final and hardest step: gush at how cute he is for hours on end.

STAR TREK

Live long and prosper is a good life mantra. Now you can share that energy and a cute star fleet symbol at home.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Blue or Yellow ornament (no RED SHIRTS allowed for 2020 Holiday)

  • Yellow paint

  • Black paint or marker

Using yellow paint, paint the solid shape of the star fleet symbol. Make sure you apply several layers of paint or it will look flat. Once the paint is dry, using a black marker or paint, draw the outline of the symbol around the paint.

Depending on which era insignia you want to use, you can either leave this blank or draw in the five-pointed star. Either way, you are now part of a long lineage of cool captains who have been where no man has gone before.

GOLDEN SNITCH

Sweep your loved ones off their feet by tossing a golden snitch onto the tree. That way you can see if their broom flight skills are rusty. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Gold ornament

  • Gold glitter paper/card

  • Scissors

  • Glue gun

To start off, cut out a wing shape on gold paper/card. (If the card is double-sided, cut two wings. If one-sided, cut four wings). On either side of the ornament, glue the wings in place. Then you’ll want to bend the end of each wing slightly to allow for more card/paper to be glued to the ornament. Do try to keep your eye on it, as it may begin to move quickly around the room.

CHAIN CHOMP

Sometimes it feels good to bite something. Sometimes that thing is a plumber with blue overalls. Fortunately for all of us, Chain Chomp can also be great decoration.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Black ornament

  • Black paint or marker

  • Red and white paint

NOTE: We used a white Styrofoam ornament and painted it black.

Paint two white circles on either side of the ornament, slightly above the center. Then you’ll want to draw/paint black circles inside the white circles. Underneath and between the two eyes, paint a large almond shape. From there, paint white triangles for teeth inside the mouth. Finally, for the last touch, in the middle of the mouth behind the teeth, add a little bit of red paint to blend out the edges. Also please, please, please, keep it chained up.

SPIDER-MAN

What’s better than a new Spidey game on gaming consoles? A Spidey ornament on your tree.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Red ornament

  • White paint

  • Black paint or marker

With white paint, paint two almond-shaped eyes that point downwards at an angle. Don’t forget, you will need to paint several layers. Once the paint is dry, using a black marker (or paint), draw the outline of the eye around the paint.

Now, starting between the eyes in the center, draw lines that get wider apart from each other the further out they get from the center. Finally, draw a "U" shape between each line, making sure they connect to create the spider web effect. Use your spidey senses to ensure all goes well.

INFINITY GAUNTLET TREE

Who needs Christmas tree lights when they can be lit with the power of the Infinity stones. So forgo all the stress of fighting the Avengers in two epic films and create your own Infinity Gauntlet with ease.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Gold Tree

  • Purple, green, red, orange, blue, and yellow ornaments

You already know what to do. Go around the galaxy and collect the ornaments. When you have them, put ornaments on the tree and wield the almighty power of *Thanos voice* balance.
